HM OK so they've finally banned me form FB at work so LJ it is then dudes.

Not a very good weekend, very down and out on Saturday after last weeks throat infection took me off work for a couple of days.  I managed a short walk o Sunday, but mainly catching up on Doctor Who on DVD I hadn't watched.  Nightmare of Eden was better than I remembered, once you got past the outragous "German" accent of one character.  The hyper-space crash and the dug smuggling angles all played very well and even the Mandrells weren't a total disaster.  They're not top league Doctor Who monsters and were certainly better hid in the jungle set then wandering around the spaceship studio 7 in full lights.

Also caught up with Planet of Giants, the opening story of season 2 and alsmost the last story to feature the original cast of 1st Doctor, Ian Susan and Barbara.  It sits a little oddly at the start of season 2 slap bang before a big Dalek story, but they couldn't hold it back as Susan left at the end of the Dalek story.  The problem is that although there's some great giant Ants and stuff, the story takes a dive in parts 3 & 4 to some really tedious stuff and a telephone operator and her police officer husband getting about 10 minutes screen time.  (the story was contemporary 1964).

So they edited parts 3 + 4 to a new part 3 with just the highlights.  The DVD presents a reconstruction of the orriginal episodes with a newly recorded soundtrack and fudged pictures.  It kind of works and kind of doesn't, but the big joy is a scene of the first Doctor actively choosing to get involved in saving the Earth from a deadly poison.  A pivotal moment for the character and they threw it away on 1964.  (along with 106 other espisodes).

So lovely to see the reconstruction.  right back to work as it's 1pm.
